Nitric oxide (NO), superoxide, and the product of their reaction peroxynitrite play fundamental roles in inflammation ( see Fig. 1 ). An understanding of the relative contribution of these species to the overall inflammatory response has been achieved by the ability to detect their presence and to block their effects. Fig. 1.
